Overview
Oxford's offers an AI chatbot available within the Oxford Academic and Oxford English Dictionary interfaces. It is important to note that the feature is slightly different in each database, but is not activated by default in either interface.
Oxford Academic
To chat with the search assistant users must select the "AI Discovery Assistant" button located in the page navigation after the search box.
The AI Discovery Assistant in Oxford Academic aims to take the terms you enter and provides you with ten results that it determines to be the most relevant along with an AI-generated two-line synopsis for each that contains an abstract.
Oxford English Dictionary (OED)
To chat with the search assistant users must select the "AI Search Assistant" button located in the banner at the top of the page.
If you are conducting research about words, the AI Search Assistant in the OED can create an advanced search for you from a question. For example, asking the assistant "What Creole words are still commonly used?" develops and links to the results of an advanced search of matching the language of origin to French Creole, Jamaican Creole, or Haitian Creole and is tagged as being "In Current Use".
As of September 2025, the AI Search Assistant is not available Oxford Music or Oxford African American Studies Center.
